Title: Restoration Shop Manager

Reports To: Curator of Collections

Areas of Responsibility: Restoration Shop

FLSA: Full-time

Salaried/Hourly: Salaried $80,000 - 90,000

Basic Function: Oversee operations of the restoration shop: Provide technical

support; acquire parts and outside services. Plan, support, and

organize daily operations in an efficient manner to ensure project

completion. Maintain, repair, restore machinery. Plan, organize,

and maintain shop equipment, inventory and resources. Ensure

the safe operation of the shop and its staff. Work as a conduit

between other departments of the Museum. Event scheduling,

as well as other crossover functions.

The restoration shop is tasked with caring for a diverse collection of automobiles and other pieces of transportation related machinery. “Caring for” may include maintenance, repair, preservation, and/or restoration of part, or entirely, a piece of machinery. Although functionality is of great importance in the care of the Museum collection, there are many other perspectives and considerations from which to view work done on each individual piece that may include condition, replicability, serviceability, use, and history.

 Mechanical skills that follow an understanding and logic of how, and why, things work. Ability to apply these skills, set standards, and teach others.

 Must have a drive/curiosity to improve overall abilities and knowledge for self, and for the team.

 Observation: to see a potential problem against a complex background, and, to teach and learn from others.

 Organizational skills – must be able to assign tasks, monitor progress, and provide support.

Mechanical Skills:

 Must be well versed in a variety of mechanical areas; ability to use that knowledge to apply, teach, stretch, conform, widen, and contort, to produce quality results.

Specialty Skills (must have skills and working knowledge in several of the following categories):

 Engine: 4 stroke, 2 stroke, sleeve valve, rotary, others

 Engine tuning

 Transmission

 Differential

 Steering and suspension

 Electrical

 Hydraulic

 Welding; Mig, Tig, Gas

 Body

 Paint; prep and finish

 Interior and upholstery

 Machining – lathe, mill, other

 Woodwork

 Metal finishing and plating

VI. Functions and Responsibilities:

 To manage the restoration shop in an efficient and productive manner that supports the enthusiasm of the team.

 Ensure a safe and effective environment.

 Develop long-range plans for maintaining the collection and to the capabilities of the workplace.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

 Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited secondary school is required.

 Additional formal training and/or certificates in trade skills is a benefit.

 10 years of broad professional experience is required.

 Strong observation skills are required – awareness of surroundings.

 Excellent communications skills are required, both verbal and written. Attention to detail and diligence a must. Budget management will be required.

 Candidate must be self-directed and enjoy taking the initiative to create and implement plans and programs with limited direction.

 This position requires knowledge and experience in all facets of mechanical repair, maintenance, and restoration.

 Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as a member of a team as well as on your own is expected.

 Have a high degree of personal and professional integrity; acts in an ethical manner and avoids conflicts of interest.

 A varied schedule, including some evenings and weekends, may be required. The normal schedule will be weekdays, Monday-Friday.

 Qualified applicants will, at the Museum’s expense, take and pass a DOT physical and drug screening, as well as a background check.

Compensation is based on qualifications and annual reviews will assess growth in job proficiency. Wages are based on a 40-hour work week. We enjoy 6 paid holidays/year and earn 20 days/year of paid time off. Health insurance and a retirement program are available.
