Museum Director Announcement

The Houston Museum of Decorative Arts in Chattanooga, Tennessee, seeks an energetic, dedicated museum management professional to fill the position of full-time Museum Director. The Houston Museum houses the world-class collection of Victorian art glass and antiques of museum founder Anna Safley Houston. Established in 1961 with a mission of “education through preservation,” the museum is now embarking on a capital campaign with a goal to expand our capacity to exhibit Anna Houston’s unique collection. The Museum Director will be key to the success of this transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Become knowledgeable about the collection, train staff and volunteers in collection details and inform museum visitors about the collection.

  • Promote the museum to the local community and to visitors through museum tours, special events, lectures and media events.

  • Manage the collection, including restoration, repair and storage of objects.

  • Manage and support staff and volunteers who provide community education and outreach.

Qualifications and salary

Qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in museum management, fine arts or a related discipline, or at least 5 years of experience in museum management. The salary is $30,000–$35,000 depending on experience.

Museum Director Job Description

The Houston Museum houses the world-class collection of Victorian art glass, furniture and antiques of museum founder Anna Safley Houston. Established in 1961 with a mission of “education through preservation,” the museum is now embarking on a capital campaign with goals to expand our capacity to exhibit and curate Anna Houston’s unique collection, expand education and outreach in the community and better share this exceptional collection with the local community and visitors to Chattanooga. The Museum Director is key to the success of this transformation. Responsibilities include:

Community engagement

  • Hire, train and support staff and volunteers who lead tours guiding visitors through the collection.

  • Develop a plan to follow up with visitors, with goals of improving the visitor experience and promoting the Houston Museum.

  • Manage and promote signature events such as the Houston Museum Antique Show & Sale and the annual Holiday Tea.

  • With the Coordinator of Education Programs, plan and participate in lectures and other public educational events.

  • Promote the Museum and associated events in the local media and via social media.

  • Work with other museums, businesses and professional organizations to promote the arts in the local community and beyond.

  • Develop and sustain relationships with members and donors.

Strategic leadership

  • Support the capital campaign by establishing and promoting a clear vision for the organization.

  • Implement our long-range strategic plan for growth.

  • Participate in financial management and fundraising efforts.

  • Propose and manage the annual budget.

  • Partner with staff and volunteers to support grant applications and manage grant projects.

Museum administration

  • Implement protocols for restoring and repairing objects, storing and moving collection objects and maintaining the Houston Museum library.

  • Manage and evaluate staff and interns.

  • Oversee housekeeping and museum maintenance.

  • Manage gift shop activities and personnel.

  • Oversee building and collection maintenance.

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.

  • Museum is a tobacco free workplace.

  • Past Perfect database experience a plus.
