The National Museum of African American Music is seeking an experienced Curator to join our team.The Curator will oversee the museum’s curatorial, collections, exhibitions and interpretive programs for the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM). Specifically, this position will serve as primary curator for the permanent exhibit, and to work on building and managing the museum’s collection of artifacts. This job requires working collaboratively with a museum team, good attention to detail, and an ability to appropriately interpret NMAAM’s mission. Supervises the training of interns and volunteers as needed. 

Salary Range: $60,000 to $70,000

The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates audience research for the permanent and temporary exhibitions. 

  • Coordinates the interpretive program with the Director of Education and Programs. 

  • Develops a sustained research program on African American music that leads to a greater understanding of various genres, scholarly publications, and future permanent and traveling exhibitions. 

  • May serve as the liaison with the Board’s Curatorial Committee and supports the work of the Committee.

  • Serves as member of the museum’s senior staff; works on strategic planning and contributes to museum development as required. 

  • The Curator will work with scholars to complete key messages of the exhibition, identify/secure objects to be used in the exhibition, and manage/care for all aspects of the collections including identifying and cataloging objects, performing research and registry duties, and supervising future staff in the curatorial department. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years, preferably five years, as a curator

  • Terminal degree in an academic music discipline (ethnomusicology preferred) 

  • Experience in planning and in developing permanent and temporary exhibitions 

  • Progressive record of scholarship and publications

  • Research and registry management 

  • Development of collection policies and procedures


  • Preference given to candidate working on developing museums, exhibitions and collections

  • Extensive use and working knowledge of digital or technological applications in museum work preferred

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of museum curatorial work

  • Travel 10 – 20%

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit organizations and familiarity with community issues

  • Experience in supporting and communicating with CEO and/or Board of Directors

  • Proven computer and software use skills, especially MS Office.

  • Ability to gain the confidence and respect of donors, board members, and staff.

  • Experience in handling confidential information and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.

All Staff Duties:

  • Serves as leader to assure strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.

  • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.

  • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.

  • Attend staff meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
